and if left around for too long it lost its legibility.

It should turn completely black IINM. But that's over any heat, not just a kettle that gives off steam.

Yes. But I remember as a kid if we got a fax we didn't want anyone to see we would just put it over the kettle and that was the end of it.

And I remember when they were the same. When printers also printed on a long accordian folded piece of paper. (not exactly a roll, but...)

They still do that in court. Thats only for printing a paper that you need copies of.
