Women's role in judaism
« on: April 14, 2016, 11:30:33 PM »
What is everyones opinion regarding the women's role in judaism? Are they superior, inferior, or equal to men?
How do you explain the brocha of "shelo osani isha"?

Can I ask a question on the whole premise of your question where do you find that there is a idea of equality from a torah perspective who says they have to be equal (I AM NOT SAYING THEY AREN'T) I think we all agree man is better then animal meaning animal and man aren't equal more so even among men we agree (I think) that a kohen is better than a yisroel so maybe man and woman aren't equal (maybe man better than woman maybe women better than man)

We make this brucha because men have mitzvahs which woman don't and therefore we make that brucha, we thank hoshem that we have more mitzvahs.

No. Just that men have qualities that women don't have and women have qualities that men don't have. Your question should be, why don't women day Shelo Asani Ish.

Rashi has 2 explanations in the Gemara about this bracha. 1 of them is that they have less mitzvos. if you look at the Rashis in that sugya, it seems like he held of this pshat more.

His other pshat - go look for yourself. (Hint - michael Savage wouldn't like it.)

It's in Menachos perek Hatcheiles, I don't remember the daf.

sorry but that sounds ridiculous. the fact that we say shelo osani isha proves that men are superior and therefore that answers your question because it doesn't make sense for women to say shelo osani ish if they are inferior.

If you look in the RAMBAM (I'll post the source when I find it) he says that there were 600000men prophets AND 600000 women prophets being a navi is the highest level soo it would seem they are equal

Have you people been through 6th grade yet?  I thought it was well-known that all the shelo asanis are because they don't have as many mitzvahs.
ok but you are still agreeing that men are superior because they have more mitsvos, no??

My proof was that a equal amount of men and women rached the highest level that a human can reach (obviously there are higher and lower levels of prophecy) so if the endgame is in your level of devotion/dveikus bahashem etc etc a equal amount reached the highest level. For a good lecture on this topic (or any other topic) http://www.dovidgottlieb.com/lectures/women_and_men.htm there is also a great book by Rabbi Moshe Meiselman but I forgot the name.

the way i understand it is; when we discuss superiority there are really two things that need to be discussed. 1.physical sense 2. spiritual sense. IMHO spiritually and in regards to the next world they are both equal, but in this physical world there is no question that men are more dominant, obviously a healthy women doesn't mind not being dominant so there is no problem, but men enjoy it, therefore the need for men to say shelo osani isha.
in comparison in this world the more "choshuv" a person is, the more we need to respect them, even though in the next world you might be better off...
