But what is a reasonable expectation of a rise in price from the current $1k?
Its 1995 W cousin with a similar 30k mintage trades at around $2500. But top grades can go for 15k or more.

For various reasons some say these wonít command the same premiums, but at least you can get an idea of the max range.

How is it a small investment and not a $1,000 investment?

I highly doubt this thing keeps up with inflation.

That's not an accurate way of looking at it.

This coin was a $70 *investment.*  That it happens to currently be worth $1,000 doesn't change the amount invested.

Re inflation, we'd need Venezuelan-level inflation for this not to keep up considering it's risen more than 1300% in less than a week already.

The question is what to do from now on. So last weeks rise is irrelevant.

Meh. Looking at it as a $1000 opportunity cost (if this is what reputable dealers are now paying) is more accurate than a $70 investment IMHO.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

$1,000 in 1995 is, due to inflation, the same as $1668 today.  Considering the 1995s (which may or may not be similar) are trading at $2500 today, it far exceeded inflation (note: I am far from a numismatist, but these numbers were thrown around upthread).

I'm being pedantic and talking in the abstract.  Investment is an investment, not opportunity cost.

In this scenario, I agree that OP gifting the coin to his/her son is not a $70 gift.  I'd argue the amount of the gift is equal to the FMV at the time of the gift.  So if s/he gives it now, it's a $1,000 gift.

A willing seller sold 30,000 units to willing buyers at $70.  I'd say that at least for that instant in time the FMV was certainly $70.

And ten times that many would have paid more.

Anyone making an investment decision needs to weigh the potential growth from where it is at the time they are making that analysis not based on what growth that already was. That would be the question when deciding whether or not to keep an investment.

Itís not dissimilar to other peopleís commitment sagas, I bought the coin under the premise that Iíd be giving up maybe $200 profit to get him a cool coin, my pleasure; never thought it would go up in value like it has. I told my son I had ordered it for him, now I should say never mind you canít have it?  If I didnít have enough money to pay for gas and groceries, I probably would. But I am not in that position right now.

So give him the $200+cost?

Assuming hes not a coin collector, that should be sufficient for him. I'm assuming he has no idea how much the FMV is now.
