A well known posek in Lakewood gave a shiur on the coin situation. He differentiated between a typical anticipated price fluctuation, for example had the price gone to $300 or dropped to $45, in which case either party would have mechusar amana for backing out, and an unanticipated major price fluctuation as in this situation. The latter would qualify as “trei tarei” and one would be permitted to back out of his commitment (according to the letter of the law) according to most poskim.

It would seem that one who proceeded to back out of the PFS deal and list the coin on eBay was already aware of the wild price fluctuation and could have anticipated the coin hitting $1000. If so there would be mechusar amana for backing out. This would apply to two Jewish parties. In a transaction with a non Jewish party there is generally no mechsar amana; since it is not anticipated that the non Jew will feel bound by his word the Jew does not have to reciprocate.

On what basis is he saying that it was unanticipated? These coins can have wild swings in either direction.

I think he was correct. There are certainly swings in each direction, but when was the last time a coin offering shot up (or down) anywhere close to 20 times the offering price right after the release?

The same difference as a team in the NFL going 15-1 and going 16-0.

And w a hand signed early card for that 70 - that’s like going 16-0 and winning the super bowl

Correct. But was wondering if it was just a few hundred dollars difference or something much more substantial.

Since no one answered your question I will give it a shoot. 4.5k vs 1.2k
As you can see a 69 is worth about the same as an ungraded coin still in its sealed box.

For PF70 vs 69, or hand signed vs not hand signed?

70 vs 69
You can check the major dealers on eBay to get an idea.

So then whats the risk in getting it graded if it would be same value as ungraded?
