The one time I was stopped, not only did it work, he even told me it was almost expired and I should make it my business to get a new one soon.

IMO the best way to get them is by going down to your local precinct a couple of times with some ”gifts“ coffee  donuts Etc and get to know the boys (You could tell them you live in the neighbourhood and want show Some support) especially the higher ups eventually you could ask for one (And knowing the cop that gave it to you especially the big boys will Help you in case you’re doing 100 in a 50 on the si 440)
 and cops know cops so you won’t be limited to that precinct

Nothing helps on the SI 440! Those cops are (moderated).

Nice - I haven't gotten pulled over too many times since I started carrying a PBA card about two years ago, but the 2-3 times I did, they let me off each time.

Did the card have the officers info on it?

In my case, it was a signed PBA card, and I handed it over with the business card. The card was from a very high ranking police official, who I know personally and have no problem calling if the officer would insist.

He didn't call the officer who's name is on the card? By which union was the PBA card issued?

He didn't call the official (not an officer, but a police official), though I offered to call and he declined.

I handed over two cards from the same official, one from the NYC PBA, and the other from the NYC DEA (Detective Endowment Association)

There are five Union associations affiliated with NYPD. I was always wondering if you can be a member with a PBA and in addition to one of the others, I guess the answer is yes I believe the PBA is the largest of them all.
