Why?

It's extremely useful for the first year and then for the next child bh.
One of my purchases (several years ago when it was cheaper) that I say was worth every penny. It's used in the house all day as well.
+1
Worth every penny especially when flying

What do you use the first year instead?
Did Doona even exist in 2011?

I've never used one and obviously it has a cult following.
But we use an UBV with the top rated Chicco Keyfit. The UBV pushes better, has more storage space for bags, and isn't obsolete after 1 year.

For the next child we used the UB rumble seat and/or the piggyback. How does having the Doona help for that?

If you live in a city, like one where buildings and walking is a thing, you want a stroller that pushes really well for walks that are more than 5 minutes, the Donna was never really good at that for us. Nothing can beat the Donna for getting you out of the apt, down the elevator and down the block into a taxi, especially if your carrying suitcases and carry ons.
IMHO
Can't say I tried everything and I don't do cult followings.

Don't.  Is extremely unhealthy.  Kids can develop what doctors now call Donna head.   Ask your doctor

Do you not have bags to store under a stroller? Or another stroller for another young child?

This is my point. It's convergence for convergence sake, but isn't good enough at performing tasks an expensive stroller should be good at.

So what do you do when your child is 18 months old?

Did you get a minivan when you had 1 kid?
Get the best tool for the job now, and the best one for later, later. Using a full sized stroller (with all its inconveniences for that age) when they're an infant since you'll need it later doesn't make sense IMO.

If I would need it in a year from then, of course. Never mind that it doesn't push as well and doesn't have good storage.

I guess I'm missing something though.

Think of a young family living in CH.

Local - (shopping, Dr visit, local park, visiting family locally) - You need a good stroller for that

Not local - (taxi to the Ohel, Dr visit, taxi to airport, family trip in car/taxi) - Doona is great for that

Yep, can't opine without trying it. I was skeptical at first, but once you use it (and compare to what you previously had) there's no going back.

(I know the gift DDF should get you if/when it's applicable for you ;) )

To some extent, the same is true of all dedicated carriers (like the one Chicco makes or Graco, etc.). That's what I did for my first 3 kids and I didn't think much of it. But eventually I got a different infant car seat that was easily compatible/pairable with my strollers. No comparison. Easier, cheaper, more convenient in the long run.

Which car seat/stroller?

So we're saying the use case is in taxis. We never use taxis locally, but that makes sense in NYC. And probably explains why I see so many Doonas in NYC and none in CLE.

But I don't see how this helps travel. Don't you have diaper bags and kids bags to shlep through the airport and on day trips? Don't you want a stroller that can push through activities, uneven ground, or sand?

I find it easier to handle than the vista due to its size and nimbleness  Especially in crowded stores.

FYI for anyone looking, Doona's website currently has (only) the red color in stock.
