That's the common conception and how it's being done (by most), but interestingly, this is not being discussed at all in the Rishonim or earlier Acharonim. Two Achronim raise the question and stay unclear. The Aruch H'Shilchan is the one and only who posits clearly that it needs to be two minim, while some others didn't take that position.

I've never actually met someone who truly has this misconception and only heard people saying how it's not true

Someone I know heard a Kindergarten teacher teaching this, they told this teacher its clearly not true but she insisted that it was true and wouldn't back down.

Come to think of it, I do remember my sisters telling me years ago that they learnt it in school...
