German Cars
« on: May 05, 2016, 01:16:15 PM »
I was having a discussion with some non-Jewish colleagues and I was asked whether Jews buy German cars or not.  I'm curious what the consensus is on the forums.

If you are looking for a consensus, you came to the wrong place.

The conversation only begins with European Jews. Sephardic and many multi-generation American Jews aren't makpid.
If you don't care why would you comment?

I haven't decided at the end what I think is right or wrong on the matter. I have arguments both ways. But at the end of the day I'd never buy one for the mere fact that my grandfather would not appreciate it and would probably not want to sit in my car. At this point that's reason enough for me not to buy one.

I'm a 5th generation Clevelander on both sides. But I wouldn't a German car. Granted that it probably has more to do with what other people would say about driving a Nazi sled, etc...

While Silvercar service sounds great, I would avoid it as I really don't want to be driving a German car.

I haven't made up my mind about Smart cars (specifically Car2Go) as it is a unique offering with no real alternative, somewhat mitigated (might be just me calming my conscience) by the fact that this was originally a French brand purchase by Daimler and AFAIK is still made in France (though Car2Go is purely German owned).

The biggest problem I see is with VW, as that company was a project of Hitler himself. See http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-27/this-billionaire-family-could-fix-vw-but-it-s-not and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen#1932.E2.80.931938:_People.27s_Car_project

i wouldn't. there are so many alternatives that there's very little justification when deciding to get a Mercedes, etc. i also find it interesting that this post came up today of all days...

I get it when it comes to owning a car. It's a status symbol and rubbing it in some people's faces may be taken the wrong way.
But I wouldn't extend it to renting a car.

i wouldn't lease either. isn't that similar to a rental? if there are no options to choose a car and i land a german model then i won't turn it down though.

No. One you have for 2-3 years and people assume that you own it.
One you have for 2-3 days and nobody cares what rental car you drive in Miami.

That is exactly right.  I was speaking to some work colleagues about Yom HaShoah and they asked.

Well, if all you care about is what other people think, then it's an entirely different conversation.

And just for the record, I do find it repulsive that people will care more about their own luxury (even if it is for a short term rental) than they care about principles and morals. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing you, just setting the record straight regarding your statement that "nobody cares what rental car you drive in Miami"

When there is no other option, I don't think I have a problem with it. For example, people living in certain European countries might find German cars more available, with better local service etc. Another example is Car2go, there simply isn't anything else like it (though if it actually had the 3 pointed star on the front of the cars I guess I would have more of a problem).

What's it's meaning? IIRC even the religious Zionists don't approve of a commemoration on this day, and opt for עשרה בטבת as an alternative.

Personally, I don't believe that 80 years later we should be boycotting German products. Is that because I don't have EU roots in the past 2 centuries? Perhaps.

But others do believe it to be appropriate and I respect their opinion, especially those who lost relatives in Europe. To buy such a statement piece is hurtful to those people and I wouldn't consider doing that. But they would be offended more by people who buy a luxury statement piece and drive it to shul every day/week and not by people who drive one on vacation for a couple days because they got a cheap rental for it.

I don't think that means I only care what other think, it's just that they are the ones who would take offense.
