So true.

I didn't imagine when I bought it that I'd get so much use out of it.

The bigger question is if he's inviting people to his plans for the solar eclipse.

I may be going for work, but we're not sure at this point.

If it turns out that I'm not going, I'd love to arrange something here if there's enough interest.

Just curious, going where? I though the whole US will get a nice view...

The whole US will see a partial eclipse; only a narrow band across the county will experience totality.

Within this band many things come into play, primarily weather and proximity to a good east-west highway for last-minute repositioning. Photographically, the sun's position in the sky and its altitude are important, as are foreground elements and local geography.

Taking all that into account, the area I'm focusing on is eastern Oregon, between the Cascades and the Idaho border.

Is the eclipse a photography event or a HTBT event? Google will be filled with pictures of the eclipse.

One unique place to capture the eclipse would be off the Pacific coast of Oregon - you'd be able to see an eclipsed sun rise.
I'm an optimist; but only because life isn't going to give me any other good choices.

True, which is why I haven't planned something yet. If my work sends me, awesome. If there's enough interest here, awesome again. But I don't think I would go otherwise.

Except that the sun rises in the east :D. And that the eclipse over the Oregon coast happens around 4 hours after sunrise...

ETA: Just noticed that you wrote "OFF the coast". But my second point still stands ;).

As predicted by the astronomers decades in advance, the shadow arrives with perfect accuracy, and touches down in the north Pacific Ocean at 16:48:33 UT*, at local sunrise. (At that spot, the Sun will actually rise while totally eclipsed. This is a sight few people - even veteran eclipse chasers - have seen, and from what we hear, it is quite uncanny.)

I didn't pay enough attention to how far off the coast that would be when I read it last year! It was never something I considered going to see so I just thought that would be cool and moved on. My original plan was to book campsite in Teton but when I couldn't get reservations (despite calling on the first day) I picked a different spot based on where the maximum eclipse will be. I figured out later that it had the additional advantage of east west road. Though I still would not be disappointed to be immobile in Teton. That would be a risk I would take and there is plenty of consolation in just being there.

I don't even plan to bring a camera. My pictures won't compare to others, and I'd miss out on the event by having tbat distraction.

Spring Workshop:

Sunday, May 21st, at Sandy Hook, NJ.

This is part of Jamaica Bay National Recreation Area, and includes a number of National historic landmarks as well. This is a wonderfully varied site; we'll be able to shoot landscapes, beaches, little forests, a lighthouse, abandoned Cold-War missile launchers, historic buildings, and a variety of birds. If the weather cooperates we will be treated to a lovely sunset over the water as well.

We'll meet mid-morning (exact time TBD based on group preferences) and continue until after sunset. This location is around an hour and a half from Monsey, 1:15 from Brooklyn, and under an hour from Lakewood. Parking is currently free as well.

This is open to everyone, and for all skill levels or equipment. As always, the better your gear the more options you have, but quite frankly even if you only bring a cell phone to this you will learn a ton and come away with some incredible photographs. I will be able to help out with gear if needed, such as tripods (with adapters for phones), filters, and so on.

Ideally though you should have a decent camera, a wide-angle zoom (the typical kit lens is perfect), a tripod, CP and ND filters, and a comfortable way of carrying everything. There will likely be many birds around, so a long lens would be incredibly useful too.

The park is quite large, and we will be able to drive between many locations. There will however be a fair amount of walking on both paved paths and sand, so make sure you're fine with that.

The cost is $120 per person. If you've been on a workshop in the past, or if you're interested in coming with a spouse, let me know and we'll work it out.

In order to make sure that everyone is able to learn and get one-on-one teaching, space is limited. The sooner you confirm your spot the better. Send me a PM here, or email me at info@morrishersko.com to reserve your slot.
