You need to have a upgradable ticket, and upgrade space to use your points

It's upgradable to business if you're fare is Y, S or M.
M and S are also upgradable to Premium.

If you have a high status then additional fares are upgradable

If you didn't pay at least $2k, then your ticket isn't upgradable in any direction. And more than $3k for both directions.

so having gold status doesn't really do much for you in terms of being able to upgrade with points? it seems like even with gold you would still need to purchase a very expensive ticket in order to be eligible.

That's right.
It helps a little bit for last minute upgrades, when they need to upgrade people when J is overbooked, but this only happens on routes with low PL and TP, like day flights to the US or European flights (besides London) - in my experience

Apologies if this has been answer multiple times before.

What is the best partner airline to accrue miles on when flying El Al? I don't fly often enough to start a collection of Matmid points but I do have a moderate amount of Delta and American points that I'd be fine adding them to.

@Dan if and when you plan to fly LY, make sure they know in advance, they upgrade their service level when they find it important (I would think they would consider your website important enough to provide you with upgraded service).
