Is it possible to use matmid or quantas points to upgrade a seat from economy to premium economy? even when booked on lowest economy rate?  and when you used a travel agent like the ultimate rewards to book your ticket/

Do they usually open up more PE seats for bonus tickets? Missed it by a day.

LY just published another quarter with operating losses..
Just trying to understand the impact of these two items:

1) All 767 will be retired by year end 2018, instead of 2020.

2)  from the press release in Hebrew: "Changing the method of compensation for travel agents and wholesalers who work with ElAl in Israel and around the world: the company adapts itself to the trend prevailing among most of the world's leading airlines, to change the compensation model between airlines and travel agents, and will switch to a new model where agents will not be receiving a base rate, currently 5% in Israel and in a variable percentage in the countries in which the Company operates"

So how do they expect to fill their planes if they don't have the travel agents pushing their product?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Same way agents sell others that don't offer. If LY cuts so will DL & UA - which in Israel pay on the fuel only to compete

United doesn't pay for corporate agencies in the USA any com on routes where they don't have competition, like on the SFO-TLV (till LY announced that they will fly this route - then they started to offer commission)

I've never booked an ElAl award flight. How are they with availability from NY to TLV generally? Coach

LY just changed the equipment on BOS-TLV in November.
Was 767
Now 772

Is this an upgrade or a downgrade?
Newer plane but more squishy (in Y)?

Not squishy at all, its a 3-3-3 configuration and most airlines have 3-4-3.
I don't understand how they plan on filling up a 777 when the're having a hard time with the 767.

What choice do they have since they are retiring their 767?

Right. Thanks. Maybe it's a transitional move until they can get enough 787s to include this route?

Why would Exit Row window seats (45A and 45K) be free, but the other seats in that row (45B,C and 45IJ) cost $110 apiece?

Because these seats actually have much more room

See LY's seat map https://www.elal.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/About-ELAL/EL%20AL%20Planes/767.pdf

Thanks. The seat map you sent shows the 767.  SeatGuru hasn't updated this flight yet, but I see that LY has two versions of the 772. The reviews of 45A and 45K (the window seats in the exit row) say something about the legroom being compromised by the wing.   Maybe I should avoid them? Free is not always a good value...

ETA:

Behind the exit row the second section of economy class seats is located. Passengers of the seats 45ABC and 45HJK will take advantage of extra legroom. However, these seats are narrower than standard as the tray tables are in the armrests making them immovable; have no floor storage during take-off and landing; the noise that is coming from the galleys and lavatories located in front will cause discomfort to passengers of these seats. In addition, protrusion of the exit doors inside slightly restricts the legroom of the seats 45A and 45K.

That's cool. Thanks. I can see the red door protruding on the map you provided.
Given that, and the slightly more narrow seats, and the immovability of the arm rests, I think we'll just sit further back and hope for a ghetto lie-flat upgrade.  Thank you.
