So, in these days' environment, I'm guessing Extra stands no chance and most upgrades go to cash.

Not necessarily.
IME most people don't bother bidding cash for upgrades. So you still have a chance with the Extra, but it's definitely slim

With Amex points you can try Qantas (cheapest), FlyingBlue, Delta or Virgin Atlantic for Elal flights.

With chase you can also try United.

More then one can take longer.

When I enter my Delta SkyMiles number on El Al, it doesn’t recognize my Platinum status. Has anyone else had this issue? Any solutions?
