What happened to not being able to secure IST flights?
I watched an interview of a pilot the other day, who was explaining the logistics of the one-off flights etc.

He explained that each flight carries LY security and logistics personnel back and forth. So that would partly help some of the issues of having a full time Israeli team on the ground. But still leaves a lot of other issues open, such as having Turkish government protect the aircrafts etc.

In other news, it's reported that ELAL is sitting on major paper losses from hedging contracts (both for jet fuel and for LIBOR rates).

I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Nice!
Direct purchases? TAs? OTAs?
purchased direct through LY
seems like they are refunding older tickets first which makes sense
they were slow to refund but now everyone should chill a bit longer
nothing going to happen if everyone waits another week for their charge to refund. especially if its points.

No.

Not sure which of my extensions made it available to me, whether it was paywall bypass or just cookie remover (probably the former, as I didn't actively remove cookies for the site).

The real reason LY left IST is they can't profitably compete on price or product with TK...

I guess that article has really aged well.   :P

Shkedy, Lieberman...

You have a double whammy here of ELAL and Israeli journalism, none of which has a great reputation for telling the truth.

And what changed that they can now fly LY planes there?
Excellent question.
I can't picture the Turkish government helping LY in any way, for political reasons.
I'll try and ask around

I stand by my theory until I hear otherwise.
LY dumped the route as they were getting killed by TK on frequency, price, product, etc. They whined in hope of getting compensated by Israel.

IINM a huge percentage of TK passenger volume ex-TLV was connecting to other destinations. It's not the direct TLV-IST (or other Turkish destinations) traffic that made TK so dominant. Case in point how many destinations other than IST (or SAW) are flown by TK as a direct route ex-TLV?

There might be something to do with security too. After all LY hasn't been flying TLV-CAI or TLV-AMM for many years either.

More reasons for LY to bail.

Right. As I pointed out:

Shkedy, Lieberman...

But one can't fully discount the passenger security issue.

When did Israel implement Open Skies policy, under which they agreed to pay 97% of ELAL's security expenses?

I've seen the future (of ELAL) and it's here. They are turning into a cargo airline, which might not be so bad, as treating retail customers was never their strong point. They never realized that the passenger airline business is first and foremost a service business.

My guess is that they will keep some sort of skeleton passenger operation, or possibly move to a charter model for passenger traffic, but they will definitely focus on freight.
Hope they don't decide to fly passengers six days a week and cargo on shabbos

If he rejects, would Israel not retaliate against TK?

Based on the open skies policy, allowing Air India to fly over a Saudi airspace, the difficulty in giving them a bailout now, and more, the government doesn't seem overly concerned about LY's well-being....
