Should I upgrade to Windows 10?
« on: May 13, 2016, 06:56:34 PM »
I currently have a travel laptop that still has Windows 7 on it.  I def prefer it to Windows 10 but I know the free upgrade is soon ending. Are there any good reasons why I should upgrade?

If your a basic user, type on word, and do basic web browsing, maybe stay. But if your into new technology, and the way all of it runs (dont know if I'm being clear here) than Windows 10 is more "up to date"
I'm not who you think I am.

Same here.

At first I was nervous to upgrade and now that I did it I think it's much faster.

Faster than Windows 8.1?
I'll put this way, I had 8.1 on my work computer and was thinking about replacing it because it was so slow. I upgraded to 10 and it runs like a brand new machine with much better specs

Here's what I would do: use a disk imaging program to back up your computer, upgrade to Windows 10, create Windows 10 installation media, then restore the computer from your backup. This way you can continue to use Windows 7 as long as you like, but you've obtained a Windows 10 license while it is still free and you have the means to install it whenever you want. CMIIW.

You can just generate a genuineticket.xml file, and back that up somewhere, and you will have the means to install it whenever you want

How do you do that?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

How do you do that?

Quote
Preconditions:
A. You have w7SP1/8.1 activated successfully. This actually doesn't apply to VL Volume_licenses no KMS (loader yes, pre-installations yes, OEM_DM for w8.1 yes, OEM system builder yes, retail yes), since they are officially not upgradeable.

B. Download your original w10 ISO which is suitable for the upgrade path. I.E. W7(SP1) Ultimate upgrades to w10 pro.

Follow these steps closely:

1. Validate your w7 SP1 (W8.1) online, best using IE.

2. Generate a genuine ticket of your installation by:

2.1 Copy gatherosstate.exe from your downloaded Windows 10 ISO to your installation which should be upgraded (locaed in the sources folder).

2.2 Run it on your activated and validated Windows. It'll output GenuineTicket.xml. Save this on a USB thumb drive or something.

2.3 Then do a fresh install with your suitable w10 ISO, skip to enter key at setup procedure.

2.4 Once it's installed make sure your internet connection is DISABLED/do not enable the internet connection! Reboot w10.

2.5. Copy GenuineTicket.xml to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket\ of your w10 installation and reboot again.

2.6. Connect online, it should activate.

tl;dr, download this file:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2iGJWPxOzXvbGp0d1gxVnh1WXM

run it on a (non-kms) activated windows 7/8.1.  it will create a file "genuineticket.xml".  that is your windows 10 activation.  keep that handy for whenever you want to install w10.  when you do decide to install w10, make sure that you do not connect to the internet at any point of the setup, nor afterwards.  you must copy the .xml file to proper folder, restart pc, then connect to internet.  you will then be activated.

Awesome! How do you install w10 without connecting to the internet, though? And what's kms?

Download the ISO?  -- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench/
KMS -- An activation method, valid for Volume Licenses.  I'm almost positive that this trick works for those as well, confirming soon...  (will not work for upgrading from an enterprise version though).

Download Windows 10 ISO, open it (7zip, windows explorer, etc), browse to sources folder, copy gatherosstate.exe to your desktop. run it. it will generate a .xml file.  done :)  (the xml file is what you need do activate/validate your w10 install whenever you choose to install it).  however, as i posted earlier, this method requires installing windows 10 without connecting to the internet until placing the .xml file where it belongs.
