People have hell with normal airlines in that situation too.

If one doesn't know how to ask for an alternative, it might be considered hell, but most airlines will rebook you on their own metal or a different airline.
I was once coming late to a Spirit flight (my appointment with a client dragged on longer than expected) I called Spirit to try to see if I can get on a later flight, only option was to buy a new ticket at full price. No credit for flight that would have been missed. I ended up buying a ticket on a different airline, vowing to never fly Spirit again.
My BIL had a flight booked on Spirit to go from a Family simcha somewhere back home. When he arrived at the airport, Spirit told him flight was cancelled and put him on a Spirit flight a day or two later. I tried to give him tips on how to argue, but he couldn't do anything. He ended up purchasing a ticket on DL to get home.
