default save location for office
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:48:20 PM »
Here is the problem.

When I download something and then save it, it defaults to saving in "Temp folder", which is then impossible to find.
This is obviously stupid, once I am clicking "save as", it should default to Documents.

But, that is not so bad, since I can just download it again. Unless I  have made changes.

What is even crazier, is yesterday I downloaded a few documents, then opened a new one, and typed in it for several hours. (6 pages of Property outlining)
Well, apparently, the default is still Temp folder until you change it or reopen Word.
So I would have lost the entire thing, except my brilliant brother knows how to find the Temp folder.

So. How can I make it that the default when I hit Save is always Documents?

What version of Office are you using?
More importantly, 1)which browser are you using, 2)do you choose open or save (it sound like you choose to open because that's usually when it goes into temp).

I am using office 2010

I am using firefox.

I usually click open, then hit save. (If I hit save off the internet, I have no idea where it goes)

In firefox, go to tools, then options.
You will see options of where to save your downloads to by default

when you hit open it goes to temp fiolder (although you can always find all of your download in the firefox download window) if you hit save then by default it save it in Downloads folder (downloads is a subfolder of "username" just as Documents and Music are).
I hope I didn't lose you here!

If you use office 2007 go to the left top of the screen, and click on this ball (equivalent to file-menu), and at the bottom there is 'word options', or 'excel options', etc, and then you choose on the left tab 'save', that's where you can see and change the location of your temp, as well as default directory.
