I guess they indeed do not share that data, because people do this relatively often, from what I understand, and nothing happens.

What is the THIS which you are referring to as being done often?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

There's only 1 this in this case.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I might have a reading comprehension problem, or a DDF thread following problem, but to me it's unclear if "people do this relatively often" refers to passing the TSA checkpoint without any ID (in which case I'm not sure how it shows anything about not sharing data with the airline), or does it refer to passing the TSA checkpoint with a different bp?

The one thing you could do is find someone else that needs to get from DC-EWR and have them take the flight....
Use refundable to get through security, and hope they don't check name by gate.

Worst comes to worst if they check names gateside you just won;t line up and will voluntarily not board. It would mean the 2nd leg of the flight will get cancelled so that is the only risk.

Oh and if the plane goes down and the manifest shows 1 person being on board and really it's someone else you can deal with that then. Really not that complicated/scary.

Thank you. I was unaware that this is done relatively often. (though I've contemplated such several times, but never acted upon).

+1

The main downside is if one/both need to fly and they lose the ticket. Do people sell tickets they booked but can't use using this workaround?

Airlines don't like to tell someone their love one died then find out they didn't and have to figure out who did. May not be a big deal to you, it's a big deal to them and they get pretty pissy if you screw with their manifest.
And to the poster who claims this happens all the time, what's your source for that?

If the plane goes  down at least he's alive, and would be happier than if he took the flight and went down with it. Even if the airline wouldn't be happy with him.

Not arguing if the airlines should care, fact is they do and they take a dim view of screwing with their manifest. Its one of those things you don't get if you're not in the industry. Ask the purser on your next flight (assuming you're supposed to be on it!)

I think you're missing the big picture. Of course the airline cares. But if they don't know unless the plane goes down, then a) a little confusion is small potatoes compared to the overall tragedy. And b) he won't care if the airline is pissed at him, because at least he'll be alive.

I would guess that finding out that they let someone else on the plane that they don't know about could expose them to other problems.

I flew to Israel with a freind of mine,  they gave him by mistake a wrong boarding pass with a different name,  when we were  about to board the plane he noticed the mistake,  he went over the one of the TSA agents and told him what happened the TSA agent told him he should try to board the plain with the wrong BP he wants to see what will happen, when we were about to board the plain he showed his (wrong)  boarding pass and his ID and the guy who checked/scanned it didn't say  anything and let him go..

TSA always (almost) check for matching boarding pass and ID.
Also photo shop works charms on name changes to boarding passes.
