As I said, the school zones are only due to political considerations that existed when the law was written.

For example, the camera here:
https://goo.gl/maps/DC4oT1BtNm8JBRvx5

It's not really a school zone, but it's technically allowed because it's close enough to a school four parallel blocks away.
So it's basically proving my point and going against their own law

No, the school part is a technical requirement. The cameras aren’t there specifically to protect students and parents.

Only reason for "whole year" is their claim of summer school. Now it is Illegal for a school to be open
Schools are still being used for meal distribution.

So why don't they operate on weekends?

It's two parallel blocks away and a 6 minute walk. No one going to/from that school is going anywhere near that camera.

So why don't they operate on weekends?

They do.

You’re right. But that’s due to state law. School zones serve as the justification (excuse) to have cameras which the city really wants everywhere.

Again. They do not operate on weekends and are within the distance of a school as prescribed by the law. Being that it is Illegal  for Schools to be Open there is no legal parameter for the speed cameras to operate!

What's not the law? That it's suspended?  Well that's what I'm saying, it should be because the soul of the law is school safety!

  • NYC wanted speed cameras, but the State Government needed to approve it.
  • State Government gave permission, but only in school zones.

NYC never installed the cameras because of school safety. It was a compromise made in Albany which only restricted their hours and locations. So why should NYC shut them off now? The law doesn't specifically tie their purpose to school safety.

You just answered your own question without realizing it...

Albany approved it for school safety, hence they only allow it in school zones.

And how many schools are operating at 9 at night?

If you don't want a fine, make sure to only speed 7mph over instead of 10.

Their excuse is the private schools.
When you're driving on an empty Ocean Parkway- which shouldn't have speed cameras on the main road and at least a speed limit of 30 (maybe even 35)- it's easy to hit 35 (or 36).

Does NYC even claim schools as a reason? They say repeatedly how they wish they had permission to install more cameras in more places for longer hours.

Am I the only one to think that the ppl complaining here are oot?
A NY'er getting a camera ticket will feel more stupid about not knowing the camera location than being mad about the city placing them.
