My mashgiach used to say that his kids asked him this question all the time, and he said "I love you kids very much, but I'll always love Mommy first." He said he felt showing them the strength of their marriage only built them, not anything else. I think I agree.

Love of ones child is ingrained in nature by GD. It's free. Doesn't take any effort or sacrifice.

This is where the what if comes into play. What if your wife and child were drowning and you could only save one of them? Which one would you save? Does that mean you love that one more?

What if when your wife is delivering there is complications and only one can be saved?
