Rental car - Liability in CA
« on: June 03, 2016, 02:35:16 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have a two week rental coming up (from SIXT) and am trying to figure out what to do with liability insurance. Per this article https://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28926-c196885/California:United-States:Car.Rental.Insurance.Requirements.html CA is an exception in that rental car companies are not required to cover the minimum liability insurance (compared to other states where they are). In that case, what does everyone do for liability in CA? I plan on doing AMEX premium CDP for piece of mind at $1 a day but am not sure what to do with liability.

Thanks!

Forget CA. I think most responsible people who don't have car insurance policy's pay for liability and don't really bother with state minimums and DNR lists in any state.
It may be a matter if opinion though and this is my opinion.

Do you buy from the companies at $10+ a day or is there a better way to do it?

I don't know for the whole canada but in Québec all liability is covered by the government, I never paid for liability in Québec.

CA is the only place I ever paid for liability insurance.
The states min don't cover much and recently thru keep going down. If you get in to an accident and total another car the min that the state cover won't  cover moat of the damages.

If you have regular car insurance many policies cover your rentals as well, although some still pay for the insurance so of something happens it doesn't effect their regular policy.

Doesn't the Amex and Chase credit cards cover liability on rentals?
(Or your own personal auto ins from home covers any gap?)

I rely on It but I've never had a experience so I don't want to say 100percent. Though what I would say is, speak to @Yehuda he had experience I think.
