Alaska Air Miles

Can someone explain in simple terms how this AA news yesterday is making everone book through alaska ? is it a similar system to AA/BA Avios ? where you can use ones miles to book a flight while flying the other airline ?
also for someone who strictly gets AA miles and uses them for coach and business class seats (no upgrades) what has changed in the AA announcement

Alaska still awarding miles by distance flown, versus everyone else which is / will be awarding by amount paid for the fare.
