Crossing the border from US to Canada questions
« on: July 15, 2016, 01:29:33 PM »
1)My passport expires on July 25 and we are crossing the US border to Canada on July 18 and returning on the 20th. Is it a problem that my passport is expiring so soon?
2) My wife's passport is in her maiden name, will they make an issue regarding the name?
TIA

(I apologize if there is already a thread for this, please let me know and I will move it over.)

Do they scan it?
If they have no way of knowing, then that answers question #2.

You shouldn't have a problem on either issue. Particularly when driving. I've crossed recently when an expired passport with no problem.

Just realized I never picked up a birth certificate for my youngest child(born in NJ). all I have for her is a SS card. supposed to leave tomorrow. would that be enough? Any advice?

Ouch.
GIYF but can’t imagine that’ll work. You’ll need to wait till Monday morning for the municipal offices to be open.

If you're driving, getting back into the US is doable, a letter from the Dr. can suffice. Not sure what the process is for getting into CA but I wouldn't write it off so fast...

My plan for now is to travel to the hospital and get the hospital birth certificate or a letter from them. In addition I'll have a family member go to the office on Monday with a notarized letter that he's helping us obtain the birth certificate. Here it states that this is doable, https://www.nj.gov/health/vital/order-vital/non-genealogical-records/ . Then ill get the photocopy as people here have said that this worked in the past.
 Any more/other advice is welcome!

Chaval that I only saw this now as I could have given you some DP. I recently, as in 2 weeks ago, crossed the US-CA border with just a SS card for our youngest.

Someone went to pick up the birth certificate for me with a notarized letter. I got a pic and it was accepted!

I had something else going against us that my passport and DW’s were long ago expired…
