Just catching up here, but assuming you're talking about the US 4x200 free, you should probably glance at the splits. Haas had the fastest split of the entire field, tied for 6th best 4x200 free split of all time.

It was the 4 x 100 and splits don't tell the whole story.

Not much interest in the men's because they didn't do well.

Phelps did swim in both finals, and they won both, so wasn't sure which you meant.

But while we're on the subject, what exactly is 'the rest of the story' past the time you actually contribute, in a competition where the object is to put in the lowest collective time, and you're tasked with the exact same swim as your teammates (except the first leg). I'm not asking about this particular race, as I only watched the 200, not the 100.

You want to give your teammate the biggest lead you can. It is easy to say just swim as fast as you can but it doesn't workout that way. His turn in the 100 was unbelievable which in turn gave his teammates over a body length lead that they never gave up. A lot easier swimming your lap knowing you have that big cushion.
