Thanks, I had a guy come and he said my compressor is dead Now the question is do I go with a split or central? It's for a separate small zone so I don't need a massive unit to cool a whole house.
Was your coil frozen?
He sad it burnt out
My unit keeps tripping the breaker immediately after turning on. Had a hvac repair guy look at it and he said the compressor is shot and i need a knew unit. Can anyone chime in if this makes sense?
A bad compressor can cause this.
Right, but does that mean I need to replace the entire unit?
No you can just have the compressor replaced but is it cost effective?
It's 6k to replace the unit. What should I expect to pay to replace compressor
What type of unit is this? 6k gets me a new AC and furnace? Also we might be talking about different things. When you say compressor are you talking about the compressor motor or the whole outside unit?
6k is to replace both outside and inside.Pretty sure it's the compressor motor but honestly don't know for sure.
For a decent 90+ efficient unit 6k is reasonable for labor, equipment and install.
Not in Chicago. You get AC and Furnace for less than that. That would be for a good size 3bdr home.
This is for a 5 ton unit. Would be 5.5k for a 4 ton unit.
Why would you need to replace the inside unit?
Probably not much difference in price. How old is the unit?
That is not my experience. They are 2 totally separate units that are independent of each other. The parts are sold separately and the labor involved is mostly separate as well. The only real overlap is the refrigerant. If it is a very old unit which needs retrofitting then maybe.
