So my Cental stopped blowing cold air. Period. It blows warm air and it seems to me that it's not full blast either.

I checked the outside unit and it seems to be working fine.

Any ideas?

(Can it be the thermostat?)
It can be many things. By saying your outside unit is running fine what does that mean, you here it running? If it is running that tells you your thermostat is working. The most common problem is lack of Freon.
I just found a new supply of forks!

So your ruling out the thermostat, correct?

And can I add freon myself?

Pretty sure you need a special license to buy freon (at least here in Nassau, NY)

That sounds like it is freezing over. Is that frost on one of the pipes?

If it is missing refrigerant then that means there is some sort of leak. It is not supposed to come out.
Feelings don't care about your facts

Yes some kind of "cap" between the fan and the compressor.

The A/C unit in my house is really old and doesn't work well. Works OK for downstairs, but upstairs get basically nothing. I would like to just get window units for upstairs and completely close off the rectangular ducts leading upstairs. It seems like I would need some type of damper to put into the ducts.

Does anyone know a simple, inexpensive way to do this? I'm pretty handy, so I could probably do it myself. Just wanted to know if anyone has any experience.

Arzel has some inexpensive manual dampers that are retrofit friendly. They're available from Johnstone supply.

If it is working for downstairs do you really need to block off the upstairs?

2.5 Ton unit recently started tripping the circuit breaker. 2 HVAC guys diagnosed it as the compressor beginning to fail and therefore causing a power surge. One said I need to replace the entire unit including the air handler in the attic because the model is not made anymore and replacing just the compressor on the condenser unit is that worth it because soon I'll have to replace the whole condenser unit.
The second guy says no problem to replace just the compressor.
Difference in price is about 4k-5k.
Any reason not to trust the second guy?

ETA: attached an image of the model in case it helps
