Is it possible to use a 1" filter instead of a 5"?

Can I use a 1" think instead?

Looking to get a split unit in my dining room as a boost to my existing central AC.

When I last had my central AC serviced the guy said that the bulk of the air was directed towards the living and bedrooms with (relatively) very little going to the dining room and kitchen which makes sense since we bought the house from irreligious people who probably spent 2 days a year in the kitchen and dining room.

Can anyone provide some insight? I'm not looking for it to snow but I would like that "aahh" factor especially when you're sitting at the table on Shabbos or while my wife is in the kitchen you shouldn't have to be sweating when the AC is on.

They range from a few hundred to many thousands...what's the difference?

I just had a Chinese guy come and put 4 new split units for me.
Very reasonable and good work.
Love the new ac, nice and quiet as well works like a charm bli a"h.
Only downside is the clock is not made for a frum person, you need to set a timer or have the plug on the outside so you can put a timer or install a honeywell 7 day timer, so anyone installing one of these should factor in a 3 day yom tov or shabbos which you want it to go on and off multiple times and at different times.

Go with zoning, simple install within your existing ductwork and way more energy efficient than having a split unit and central working the same time. Check out Arzel, they were designed for retrofit.

Going into contract beH on an older home. AC compressor is from 2002. Working at full capacity now. How long should we expect it to last and what are the estimated costs that we should be aware of (repairing, replacing etc.)?

AC last around 15 years. Give or take a couple of years for the way it is maintained.

I'm running into 2 issues:

1) The size of the return air vent (I think that's what it's called?) is fairly unusual (7.5"x23.5x1) so it's difficult to find filters for it, and
2) Filters are expensive!

I've been reading about permanent electrostatic filters - not very expensive, I think they even sell kits to make whatever size you want?

Does anyone know about the pros and cons of this, or has done it and can share tips? Supposedly there are companies that will custom make these for you, but I have no idea if they're reliable or not....

I want to get the basic one because it's cheapest but based on the below it looks like I may as well be killing myself

AFAIK the chart is accurate. Remember when you go outside you have no filter.

Well that's why I wear one of those hospital masks when I go outside.
That's the only thing I have in common with the Chinese.

That's another reason why I love the winter, get to look normal without having to wear the mask only my scarf around my face. 🤪

I had an HVAC tech come down to check my central A/C unit and he looked at the sticker on the compressor unit which says it uses Mo99 (R438a) refrigerant, and he said that's really flammable and I have to turn it off or my house will explode. Anyone ever heard of this?

I'm 99 percent sure the guy is trying to scam me. Everything I see online says it's non-flammable, same safety rating as R22.

He has to turn off your AC to add Freon?

He said he wouldn't even add any because the stuff is so dangerous. He said I have to replace the whole thing. He even disconnected the low voltage wire just to make sure I don't run it, but I reconnected it after I realized he was scamming me.

I heard of scammers not never so blatant. Stay away from this guy!!!

Leave a bad review for him, wherever you got his info from.
