How big does the cavity an HVAC return need to be? I have an enclosed cavity (behind sheetrock, no duct work) that runs from the system in the basement to the second floor and splits from there to three bedrooms. I'd like to move this cavity to run between the studs instead. Can this be done by just ensuring the replacement cavity has the right amount of square inches? Better off running ductwork?

At least in theory this can even be to code.

Have r22 system no clue if anything was mixed into it in the last 20 yrs.
Seems to be leaking a little, but there's still pressure in it. The charging ports were left uncovered and are dirty.

main questions
1. Should I use RS 44b or Mo99 or something else.

6. Are leak stop products worth it?

The filter in my air handler is in an extremely difficult place to reach. Is it okay to completely remove the filter from the air handler and instead install a filter at the return?

no, it will dust up the system

I've done a window unit. see here for Pics. Definitely not as effective as in a house but with a mat, (not sure about bamboo poles) it does help. I'd imagine a split would help too if it's directed down. Up, though, probably not too much.

the filter must be between the intake and the unit, where it is sucking in, not where its blowing out

The way I understand my system is designed, and I have no HVAC experience.

There's a return vent in the ceiling that is feeding into the furnace, at the bottom of the furnace there's a slot for the filter cassette, below that there's a duct that takes the filtered air to the air handler, now what I'm trying to do is get rid of the built in filter and instead place a filter in the return duct.

My understanding is that you can never have two filters as it would cause the system to be overwhelmed, but I also understand that the way it is now there's no filtering for the 15 or so feet of ductwork between the return and the furnace, vs if the filter is at the return.

So I'm not sure what the purpose of having the filter built in is.

If there is only one return I don't why you could not put it anywhere you want in the return (beginning/middle/end).
