Thanks everyone, already hard at work on the next sections.

Awesome. The reason why you won't find any information on traveling to Cuba from Canadians is that they all go on all inclusive programs to sit on the beach, drink and smoke pot for a week.

Sad. It's a wonderful place to visit, to meet and mingle with the locals. What a waste to go and just klutz.

How do they maintain these old Cars ? Parts , bulbs,

I'll get into that later in the report, but the quick answer is that these cars are pretty much all Frankensteins, with random parts from all over cobbled together.

That is true, but she was wrong about Cuba. We only got arrested once.

[Something Fishy] Unlike a regular photography trip, this time we needed to go small and light on the camera gear. There were a couple of reasons for this:
  • Everything that we brought along wold need to be carried on our backs all day, as we didn't have a car and would be walking around all day. My camera bag on a typical trip weighs well north of 50lbs; no way this would fly in Cuba.
  • In street photography, you need to be quick; there is no time to be changing lenses normally. This is a perfect scenario where convenience trumps absolute quality. Instead of three or four top-quality lenses covering a given range, what we needed was a good-enough superzoom.
  • As far as possible, we needed to be discrete and non-threatening. This meant no huge and expensive-looking lenses, no obvious camera bag, and so on. In fact, even the gear that we did take got a haircut: lens hoods were left at home and battery grips were removed from the cameras.

With that in mind, I settled on the following gear:
  • Nikon D800 camera.
  • Nikon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 lens. Smallish, lightish, greatish range, nice and sharpish - perfectish walk around lens.
  • Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 lens. Very wide, very fast - perfect for night and car photography.
  • Nikon 85 f/1.8 lens. Lovely portrait lens.
  • Oben CT-3520 carbon fiber travel tripod with a BB-1T head. Small and light, it has a detachable monopod as well, which, combined with a GoPro gimbal, comprised my FishyStickTM.
  • GoPro Hero 4 Silver, Feiyu 3-axis gimbal, and a collection of mounts and clips.
  • Meike MK320 mini flash.
  • Lowepro Slingshot 200 backpack.
  • A pile of accessories: batteries, chargers, memory cards, filters, rain sleeves, geotagger, straps, plates, wireless remote, lens cleaning supplies, external hard drives, etc.

[whYME] Having made the switch to the dark side before Iceland, I was also on Nikon.
  • Nikon D600
  • Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6
  • Rokinon 14mm f/2.8
  • My Dolica Proline 57" Traveler tripod was out of service so I borrowed a Oben CT-3510 carbon fiber travel tripod with a BB-0T head. It doesn't fold up quite as small as the Dolica but it was small enough.
  • GoPro Hero 3+ Black with a smaller-than-usual pile of mounts etc.
  • Amazon Basics SLR sling backpack for walking around town.
  • The usual accessories such as batteries, chargers, wireless remote, headlamp, lens cleaners, laptop and hard drive, and so on.

[Cat In The Hat] I shoot Canon, so my gear was slightly different:
  • Canon 5D MkII Camera.
  • Canon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L lens. Canon's version is significantly larger and heavier that Nikon's, but it was pretty much the only good full-frame option available.
  • Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 lens as my wide and fast option.
  • 3 Legged Thing LEO carbon fiber travel tripod.
  • CampCo Humvee photo vest. I chose to go the vest route instead of a bag, and this was by far the best accessory I brought.
  • The standard mountain of accessories, similar to SF and whYME..

for those (like me) that wonder:

Side note: Selfie sticks are now banned from all PhotoDOs, with violators getting dunked in the nearest body of water (bonus points if the water in question is the Arctic Ocean - take note, Chaim'l).

An exception is made for truly epic selfie sticks, such as my own:

(FishyStickTM in action at the Cuba PhotoDO)

[Chaim'l] Interesting, the guy in the middle holding the selfie stick looks a lot like SF... Or was that a "FishyStickTM"?
