What do you mean by "getting involved"?
Are you referring to becoming a "mechanical turk" or paying other turks to perform tasks on your behalf?
I have a had positive experiences and results in the past from using the mechanical turk platform, although I have not used the platform recently.

I did this for a while and made nearly $100 a week (5 days) working on it minimally during the work day and at night when I got home (usually 5pm-11pm). It takes a lot of effort though - by no means is it easy money. If you want to make decent money you'll need to install various scripts and take quite a bit of time learning everything just to make it worthwhile (albeit much less time than what it takes a newbie here). At the end of the day it wasn't worth my time to keep doing it religiously although I do Turk a little every now and then if I want to make a few bucks on the side. Check out http://www.mturkgrind.com/ if you are seriously interested - there are many forums dedicated to Mturk but I found the folks here to be the most helpful.

NP - if you have any questions feel free to PM me. I spent about 3 months seriously MTurking before deciding it wasn't for me.

Why would someone do a task for a few pennies?

You work your way up.
A few pennies at a time and you can buy a new stick of deodorant

+1 ,what exactly are the details in this? That post that's quoted has way to much to go through to begin to understand what it is!?

tl;dr
Requesters post tasks (called HITs) that can be graduate level surveys or menial (and often repetitive) tasks like transcribing information from receipts for apps like Ibotta and Checkout51. Workers complete these HITs for predetermined payouts. The more work you do, the better (higher paying & more efficient) work you can do.
