If you're checking your baggage through, you'll definitely be safe JFK-TLV (with the 32kg/158cm), TLV-NYC I'm not sure, but probably.

If I can pull off a miracle and get decently priced tickets I would love to go to israel for sukkos with the family (from LAX). I searched on Expedia and there are tickets for under 1100, but using Transaero, via Moscow (9/23-10/10).
Not sure if I should go for it considering the review mentioned above...

I have booked a lof of people on Transaero to Tel Aviv. They have all been satisfied with the service. As for safety they primarily use western manufactures Boeing and Airbus for that route. However one of the connecting flights to Tel Aviv uses an Ilyushin 96. I would not fly on it.

I flew with them last sukkos. It was interesting, but I have no complaints, and would definitely fly with them again, having saved over $400 per ticket.

Sounds scary! A travel agent told my dad that they use old airplanes that other airlines put out of service!
Anyone know if that's true?

I flew them last pesach and had a very positive experience.  They seemed to be going out of their way to keep all the jews happy.  The only issue was that their english is pretty bad

Only this one, otherwise they use the 777, 747, and A321 from NY to Tel Aviv.

Thanks a lot for the feedback I could have saved a lot of money by going with this airline but based on some of the reviews I decided to book a direct flight on elal even though it cost me a pretty penny. Also this itinerary had me on a 9 hour layover in moscow which would have been a nightmare with the baby

+1 Sometimes it is worth the extra money. Especially if you are traveling with a baby.

I just booked them now motzai sukkos going from JFK-TLV leaving tomorrow at 2pm so less then 24hrs to the flight paid $1241 compared to $3000 on other airlines. stopovers seem to be find about 4-5 hrs. Ill report back when i get back from israel in a week and see if it was worth it.
