Apparently the grandmother had driven the 2 older kids so the mom only had the baby in the car.

Also, see this report directly from the person that found the baby.

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Mom-Arrested-After-Leaving-Tot-in-Car-to-Go-Shopping-391820551.html?_osource=SocialFlowFB_NYBrand

First of all, he said baby was in car 10 minutes not 40. Also at then end he describes how she said where's my baby in shock and confusion. Not as in,why did you guys take my baby out of the car?

In the APP he said: Eckel said Gruen came out of the store with two other children at about 1:20 p.m. asking where her baby was.
"She knew she left the baby in the car," Eckel said. "I felt like crying. After something like this happens, you act on it and think about it later."

Many people took this to mean she knew as in she intentionally left him. It more probably reads as - she walked outside and saw the scene (or realized inside) and suddenly remembered that she left her baby in there.

As I had written previously
To say that it can't happen to anybody I think is ignorant. If you read articles about people it's happened to, it's pretty clear.
However those stories all end with a parent having a realization that the kid is in the car and hectically running to the car to find the child. It seems pretty clear that that's not what happened here
That is a possible interpretation of her where is my baby question although those there at the time seem not to have understood it that way according to the articles.

That is still different than the case of the parent who doesn't regularly bring to the babysitter.

I didn't realize the identities had been made public.
Says the name clearly in many of the articles.

i am a parent and i have never left my child in the car. but i did set that waze should remind me. i believe we are all humans that can make mistakes. this is not specific to this case since i did not research it. but so many times it is a simple mistake that costed the child its life, and the parent left with guilt forever

A) I don't think the number of kids has any bearing on the story. If anything, I can imagine it being far easier to forget about a baby when he/she is the only one in the car and is asleep.
B) To compare it to being left at home or at school is wrong. There, unlike in a hot car, a child is (hopefully) safe. Children inside a parked car ought to be treated with the same attention as children in the middle of crossing a street - they are essentially in danger until they've reached safe ground.

That can go both ways. When others are pulling at her skirt and one is quietly sleeping it can get forgotten.

I saw a baby in a car with no one around. I walked into the grocery store and announced, does someone have a red mini van?  A lady shopping says, "Me". I replied, the cops are on the way. She says, how do you know? I replied Because I called them!

IMO it can make sense to forget the baby for a moment (when other kids are there). But not more than a minute or 2.

Most of the posters here want to show how they know that it was an intentional act, which is indeed very sad, vdl
So what exactly is the point if this (split up) thread, being that it's not an awareness issue?

There are 2 issues.
There are babies that die due to negligence and those that die due to a mistake.

For negligence there's nothing you can do besides punish the parent.
To avoid mistakes, we need awareness that it can happen to even the most loving and caring parents, ans that we should add extra measures to avoid these tragedies.
