Henche asked why it's not "bina l'havin" and I said that would be redundant.
Exactly.  And I'm saying it's not,  it's a grammatically correct form.

Nu, what does grammar have to do with it? A lot of sentences could be grammatically correct form but the content is syntactically redundant.

How long till this gets split into its own "redundant" thread.

That's correct.  I was working with the premise that redundancy is a form of grammatical incorrectness,  but I concede that it is not necessarily so.

Correct.

"The man used the meat slicer to slice off a slice of meat."

That's all grammatically correct.

So back to Henche's question, why is the chicken using his understanding to discriminate and not just to understand?

There is no Ribis at all, every Jewish store has a return policy.

And what about for the Jews in Texas or Honolulu, why isn't there a Halucha problem for them if they return? why only these 5 places?

We gotta Boycott them until they change their policy.

Its pure discrimination!!  :-[
I love how you all are talking as I'd you are experts on the subject despite clearly never having learned the sugyos

Might depend on how you translate that.

Simple meaning is a tatty chicken. You can translate it as heart. The question remains either way. Why is the chicken/heart using its understanding in order to discriminate? Why not use understanding just to understand?

It might be that the chicken is only capable of using its understanding to understand, but a heart can go deeper and actually discriminate.

Nu, either way. The question then is even bigger according to the simple translation. Why is it not enough to thank Hashem that the chicken has understanding? Why does he have to "go deeper" as you say and actually discriminate?

But my point--and this is the answer to Henche--is that "bina l'havin" is no big deal. Imagine a chicken who "understood" the difference between day and night but didn't discriminate between the two. So much more so a heart that can explain the difference between one thing and another but doesn't make choices between the two.

Understanding unto itself is not enough. Understanding must lead to discrimination.

I don't think it makes a difference to the discussion, but isn't להבחין generally translated as 'distinguish'? As in 'to distinguish between night and day'. Is that what you meant, or does discriminate have some other meaning in this context?

Right. Distinguish/discriminate. Same idea. The point is don't just "understand." Be discerning. (And now we have a third synonym.)

How this started was someone implied that you shouldn't "discriminate" and I said that being able to distinguish/discriminate/discern is something we thank Hashem for each day.

This is the klipah of today. Everyone "understands" but very few will take a stand and say what is ok and what is not ok.

Ah, but that's where you lost me. I always looked at discriminate as having a negative connotation, distinguish as having a positive connotation, and maybe discern/differentiate being more neutral.
