Ah, but that's where you lost me. I always looked at discriminate as having a negative connotation, distinguish as having a positive connotation, and maybe discern/differentiate being more neutral.

Discriminating does not have to be negative at all. It was turned into that. "Hey! THAT'S discrimination!" Yeah, ya darn right it is!

There is nothing wrong with discriminating. I would post the dictionary definition but someone just posted in the pet peeve thread that they hate when people do that. :P

It's OK to post a dictionary definition as long as it's not a screenshot (I think).

dis·crim·i·nate
dəˈskriməˌnāt/
verb
1.
recognize a distinction; differentiate.
"babies can discriminate between different facial expressions of emotion"
synonyms:   differentiate, distinguish, draw a distinction, tell the difference, tell apart; separate, separate the sheep from the goats, separate the wheat from the chaff
"he cannot discriminate between fact and fiction"
2.
make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age.
"existing employment policies discriminate against women"
synonyms:   be biased against, be prejudiced against;
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Was reading a fiction book where the author mentions that the downfall of society started when "discriminating" became a bad thing.

LOL...no, the point was that discriminating CAN be used in a bad way, but it's also the ability that people have to determine differences, and what is better or worse, what is finer or lower quality - as mentioned above, "a discriminating palette."

When we lose that ability because it becomes with the connotations of prejudice, it means losing the ability to judge anything.

Intelligence is discriminating between different things.
Racism is discriminating between like things.

Very good. Now the problem is when we're forced to pretend that different things are like things (e.g. men and women)
If you don't care why would you comment?

If you think cucumbers and pickles are the same thing, then you're unintelligent. (Just translating.)

In what they are different  (the taste) you are discriminating.

Unjust discrimination would be discriminating between two things in a matter where they are the same, because they are different in another area.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

Correct.

"The man used the meat slicer to slice off a slice of meat."

That's all grammatically correct.

So back to Henche's question, why is the chicken using his understanding to discriminate and not just to understand?

Without discrimination there is no understanding.

Example:

To understand that an apple is red, one must be able to discriminate between red and other colors. Someone who is colorblind from birth cannot understand what red is because he cannot discriminate it from other colors.

Discrimination is a prerequisite for understanding.

That being said, it doesn't necessarily explain the nusach of the bracha. It seems that bina is the attribute which enables havchana.

Wrong. Pickles and cucumbers have different tastes so you liking it or not has to do with a distinct difference. On the other hand, disliking a yellow squash and liking green squash, although they taste exactly the same would be discrimination.
I'm not who you think I am.

Wrong. Pickles and cucumbers have different tastes so you liking it or not has to do with a distinct difference. On the other hand, disliking a yellow squash and liking green squash, although they taste exactly the same would be discrimination.

A) Look up the word discrimination. Both examples are clear discrimination.

B) Let's turn it around.
Yellow and green squash, despite tasting the same, have a distinct difference that they don't look the same and aren't even blood relatives. Cucumbers and pickles are literally both green cucumbers, despite tasting differently.

As you can tell the original statement lends itself to all sorts of arbitrary views of what's considered different and the same.
It sounds nice to quote but it doesn't pass the smell test. The difference between racial discrimination and other forms of discrimination is that as a society we determined that racial discrimination is illegal (because we felt it's more unfair) and others not necessarily so.

Although there are multiple conversations happening on this thread, I think most people are able to understand them. Yet, the mods have not yet made a distinction and turned this into a "Thank G-d who gave the chicken discrimination" thread.

It started here, btw. http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=13937.msg1548467#msg1548467
