So last summer I paid a ton to get LG classic phones for my daughter's which are on my t-mobile plan. At this point 1 in 5 calls to the phone actually ring and don't go straight to voice mail.
Also have been getting random no service message.
It's super frustrating, and unsafe when they are out alone.
I suspect it's because 5g is the easy of the future and 3g/4g are less and less supported.
But I am hesitant to buy the new 'phone that works really well', the Kyocera, for a small fortune ($225 each) and start a Verizon plan, for the same thing to happen in a year.

The reason why you are having issues has nothing to go with 5g. The Lg classic phones break down. Also may have to do with the fact that you are on t-mobile. If you buy the Kyocera on Verizon, its worth it.

So odd. sibling of mine bought one and got it unlocked, and ever since he got it, I have yet to hear a complaint from him. He had said it works flawlessly, phone calls ring on the first ring.
 Assuming in order for it to work on tmobile network you had them unlocked, as it's tied to tracfone.
 As well in what area are/were you using them? 
The kyocera and the exalt are similar pricing, there's some decent websites to buy them from, and you can use mobi or tracfone service should you want to make the switch.

  The mobi service would cost you $10 a month on verizon. and a few dollars less with a referral code I can get you after you get the service. It's 1gb data enough for pic messages and whatever you need done, togther with unlit talk and text.

 Or Tracfone which at the moment you can sign up for each kid(separate account to get eaxh one points) which would cost you $15 for the first month and then $15 for the 2nd month. Again 1GB. Unlmtd Talk/text.
And when using my referral code NNBFY-E624 on tracfone.com after activating an account and signing up for the rewards within 14 days of adding a new plan you'll get 8,000 points which is enough fot 4 months of free service. (Yes 2k a month of points gets you the $20 plan with unlmtd tank/text and 1gb). Now you need to have the phone service active for 60 days before the points kick in. So in essence you're paying $30 for 6 months of service of tracfone service.      And after that if you're not interested in tracfone at $20 a month, a simple process you port over to mobi which is also a great service at $10.

Another thing (that is solvable) is making sure it has the latest version of device firmware (there were a few updates for the Exalt since it was released, and they might make a difference in service issues.)

If you have the Walmart family LG Classic it should very well with Tmobile with no issues as that phone supports the bands needed.

I'm in LA. They were purchased from someone local already set up by @Kosher_Cellutions
@myi the classic would be great. They're just not working reliably. Many of their friends have them as well and they are increasingly not reliable.

 mobi on Verizon with Kyocera sounds good. Is it real Verizon service? Where would one get the phone?

They are replacements to the LG Classic but they are models to all the carriers which is nice.
