Laptop Suggestion

I am looking into getting my wife a new laptop for PA (physician's assistant) school which she is starting in a little over a month.  We have both had decent to bad luck with HP's in the past and not really looking to spend Mac $$.  Any recommendations for a laptop that has good speed/memory and will last?   Someone recommended going to a manufacturer's site and building my own, any good/bad experiences?

I hope I'm not posting in wrong thread . This seemed to be the most logical to do it in through what I found in the search engine.
I'm looking to buy a new laptop . Necessities being regular internet usage, basic computer stuff and mobility . I'm not such a computer guy. However , since I will be using it for work related tasks I also need it to be on the smaller side and light weight. (I don't do Mac btw) . I'm used to the I guess old Lenovo set up which is my old computer and It seems that Lenovo has some great options .
Any advice ?
