When applying for GE for an infant, do they need an SSN first, or is a passport sufficient?

IIRC, I am pretty sure SSN was needed.

How long does it usually take for the global entry credit to show up on your account?

my online account shows the charge and credit 3 days apart, but those could just be posting dates, I could have paid for global entry a few days earlier than it posted

Just a data point, my husband had an appointment yesterday but mine is not until September so I decided to go with him and hope they take me. Unfortunately, they wouldn't take me, I spoke with 3 different agents and they all said the same thing. There were a lot of people there. The guy who seemed to be in charge did tell me that since I am traveling domestically next week, and all of the other members of my party have TSA precheck, I would likely get it anyway.

What happened with NYC enrollment centers?
Back when I did it for myself a year ago I got an appointment withing a week for a time I liked.
Now I did it for my son and I can't get an appointment at a normal time for almost 2 months!

Ever since they got more security cautious, more and more people are applying for TSA-precheck, which makes the lines longer and longer....

Kids can go if parents have tsa pre check. Kids do need their own global entry, not sure how that applies to infants though, maybe that's what they were referring to

So is there any point in getting a child who's 3 global entry?

It's an old "Macloikes" look upthread, depends which airport most airports will warn as you against that saying that they can revoke your pass if you do that.

Yes I am getting one for my 1 year old now and I made 1 for my 3 year old last year.
If you want to use GE in a lot of airports the won't allow him unless he has his/her own.

Reporting back.

None was needed!
