FLL is more convenient for a lot more people almost anyone flying out of South Florida, plus the potential amount of JetBlue codeshare that can open through it are many.

FTFY

Right, yet ELAL still chose MIA (supposedly wanting the AA connection to LATAM).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Most people going to LATAM would prefer to connect in MAD, a lot easier than connecting in the US.

Yes, but that leaves them travelling on Air Europa or other airlines. Does ELAL codeshare with anyone currently to LATAM?

Considering LY doesn't operate on Shabbos, not really.
Probably also negotiated lower parking fees from MIA in exchange for the route.
Though, until today NYC were the only airports in NA where LY kept aircraft parked over Shabbos. (No Fri flights from TLV to YYZ, BOS or LAX even in the summer)

The 14-hour flight from TLV seems quite long given it takes 15 to get to LAX?

TLV-MIA is only 971 miles shorter than TLV-LAX. Take into account headwinds over the Atlantic (which the LAX route has less of) and it makes perfect sense.
