You can achieve Marriott Rewards Platinum Elite status by completing 9 stays in 90 days. While challenging you do not get temporary status, but you will get status for the rest the challenge year and the following year. If you’d like to challenge you can either call in ( 800 – 468 – 800) or request it here https://www.marriott.com/marriott/contact.mi?aff=MARUS&affname=1100l539&co=US&nt=PH

9 Marriott stays = Marriott Platinum and Marriott Platinum = SPG Platinum then 9 Marriott Stays = SPG Platinum

Also don’t forget that award nights count towards elite status. So you could use points to qualify for status as well

I don't have experience with a Marriott challenge but I did do an spg challenge where you need paid nights. His whole basis for saying award nights counts was bec they are considered eligible nights for Marriott. That is true as well for spg and it did not count. Again I doubt it counts but if it does than lucky for everyone.

U don't need to do the challenge. If u link ur account u will be Spg platinum automatically

This would be amazing if it allowed Award Nights but i really doubt that.
Also, best time to request it would be beggining of next year so you have it through 2019.
(Or just time your last stay for next year)
I would totally do a mattress run if it allows award nights

Just confirmed with Marriott rewards that you need a paid stay. She said she will email me the TOCs and I will post them as soon as I get them.
