Please help me understand/make a miles ticket
« on: September 26, 2016, 09:38:52 AM »
Working on going DTW->TLV on 10/30. One way is fine, but for a good deal i would make the return on 3/29 or 4/2-4/5.

Air France has DTW->TLV for 25,000 miles $145.05. Straight from Detroit would be really nice.

Unfortaunately, i'm pretty ignorant on the points thing though and don't think i have any. How much would that cost me, and how do i go about doing it?

Coming to the party would be reading up on the beginners threads, not asking to be told years worth of amassed knowledge "al regel achas".

No. but he's got to be more specific, and ask in appropriate existing threads.

Personally I would tell you to start with CC threads so that you understand how to earn the points. Unless you were looking to buy them on the gray market... In which case you would need to understand the basics of the mileage programs.

It takes years of accumulated knowledge to know how to search here.

Its like when one walks in to a Yeshivah and doesn't know Alef Bais, and asks to be taught shas. He would be told to learn the basics and come back. Kudos to the OP btw, for not storming off in a "n00b huff" screaming how no one here is helpful.

No, I did that for him.

I certainly hope a beginner would be treated with more respect in a bais medrash than newbies are treated here.

Besides, he also needs specific information. Compare (l'havdil) to asking a posek a shailah. I would hope the posek wouldn't react like some people sometimes react here.

Yeah, that's more what i was looking for. The ticket seems easy to find, though i was wondering if it seemed good and all.

I have no miles or know much about them. I've heard people talk about purchasing them but i have no idea what i need first, or even whom to go to. I was hoping a post on DDF forums would send me in the right direction with a bit of good and useful advice.

I don't know if this is great advice (some of the experts here can correct me), but maybe call miles brokers such as PEYD.

The link I posted before is the right neighborhood. Here are 2 threads that should be helpful:

Hello:

AF is a rewards partner of Flying Blue, which is actually the program which charges the least from North America to TLV, so kudos to you for realizing that.

A good thing about Flying Blue is that they are transfer partners of nearly every credit card program, so essentially you need to find a credit card, or a combination of them, which will award you as many points as you need. Keep in mind that 25k is for one way, so double it for a r/t for one person, etc...

At the moment, a "hot" credit card is the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, as it includes may great perks, including 100,000 UR points upon meeting the spending threshold. You can also see if you can find a nice Amex Platinum offer. Keep in mind that these are considered luxury credit cards, and that not everyone will be approved. If you do choose to apply for this card, or any other card, please try to use Dan's referral link.

At the end of the billing cycle in which you have met your spending threshold, you will receive your point bonus, which you can then transfer to Flying Blue and book your tickets.

CAVEAT: Everything I just mentioned is only one of many options for you to get to Israel. As everyone here correctly mentioned, there is no substitute for educating yourself on this subject.

Good luck!

It really depends what the cash price is for the equivalent ticket. The way you would figure it out would be once you know which mileage ticket you want, try to find a broker that will sell you miles. (Most of the ones that advertise in the frum media that they buy miles will sell them to you too [however at a significant increase to what their market value is]). Once you have that info it's just a matter of dollars and sense.
