Wha? What AT&T plan do you have? ???

What does AT&T consider a smartphone? Do they go by OS?

I have a regular family plan with 10 unlimited data added on.

Not sure what atts rules are for a "standard phone" vs "smart phone"

I was thinking about it but I really wanted something with it. I am thinking about going with a nokia w/ symbion. Any thoughts about symbion? Or a specific nokia that is good?

I used to LOVE Symbian. Its a great platform, and its a shame they Nokia officially dropped it.

But you can get some great S60 phones cheap these days (mostly because they have all been discontinued). I was a fan of the N95 for a while, even used it as my camera on a vacation trip (has a 5pmix Carl Zeiss glass lens that can rival some point and shoot cameras). I've also got an E71, which I recommend if you're into the flat-style blackberry look.

Symbian can do almost anything a modern smartphone can do, however it lacks the "pizazz" that modern phones have, so you'll likely get away with a cheaper phone and cheaper rateplan (less requirements).

They tried to create a "cooler" less tech/nerd centric OS called Maemo, but Nokia's popularity was tanking fast.
As of about a month ago, they announced a partnership with Microsoft to produce new Windows Phone 7 products from now on.

Which was surprising, but kind of cool - WP7 is pretty sleek (not for me, but its actually a really nice OS), and Nokia makes the best hardware. But them together, you could have a killer selection.

But those would most definitely be considered "smartphones", as it is a very modernized OS and nothing at all to do with windows Mobile 6 and under.

Meanwhile, yes, Nokia will run Opera mobile, Opera mini, Skyfire, and a host of other awesome browsers, gmail, syncML clients, exchange, music streaming, etc... I'm not familiar with I heart radio, so I'm not sure if they have their own app for Symbian or anything, but I recall apps like mobbler allowed my N95 to listen to last.fm

lastfm isnt free for mobile anymore

Although Im pretty sure AT&T will consider them smartphones.

I like my phones, so no, they are not for sale.

I'm not sure how ATT will consider obsolete smartphones. Sprint, for example, considers only OSes that came out after they made the smartphone/dumbphone restriction (WebOS, android, WinPhone7, etc are considered smartphones, but Windows mobile, Symbian, Palm OS, etc are not). Also, since it is GSM and you can technically swap your SIM around, its hard for them to really say you're not allowed on a regular phone plan if you're bringing your own hardware. Yes, they can check the model of your phone when you access the network, but it unlikely they'll care about these older models.

Meanwhile, I'm a fan of Virgin mobile, too. Especially when for $25 you can get data + text alone (phone calls are dead according to techcrunch, who needs minutes? ha!). You can get the LG Optimus on Virgin, which is an EXCELLENT Android phone for the money.

i have been pretty happy with the samsung solstice.
i think smart phone is defined by at&t as whether the phone can use a wireless internet connection

I don't quite think that the solstice is "smart" it can't really do much, other than have a cool touch screen. It's one of those phones that your grandmother (or mother) thinks is an iPhone because it's touch.
