You could go for the Leica as well, quite happy with happy with it (and 18x killer zoom), I can also add basic filter such as UV on it.

Whatever you buy, get a second battery, and a good pouch/bag + extended warranty.

Laica's are point-and-shoot? 18x optical zoom?

extended warranty?

Do people still fall for that? Truth in the second battery thing, though. Unless you get one that uses standard AA (my current P&S is a powershot that uses standard batteries. Its nice on vacation to know that I can pop into a convenience store and buy more juice).

Why is it that on Amazon, the price on the Canon SD1300 and 1400, seem to be much higher than a few months ago?

Also, is the Canon Elph, taking over SD? When I go to either the SD1300 or SD1400, Amazon tells me that there is a newer model, (Elph 100 or Elph 300). Does anyone know if it's the same as the SD, or what does it have that makes it a NEWER model?

Elph 100 or Elph 300
Elph 100/300 look amazing.
Ultra-thin and finally 1080p HD video that even lets you use optical zoom while shooting!
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

This time of the year is when cameras go on clearance and the new models come in good if you wanna grab a deal (Radio Shack, and Staples for sure have a bunch on clearance, and you can even get a greater bargain on a floor model). On the other hand, it means wait if you don't want to start with an older camera already.

So, im assuming that that's the upgrade. I wonder why, when I compared the sd1400 and the elph 300 on Canon's webside, that they didn't stress that, or perhaps I missed that.

Its actually the same Digic chip that has been complained about in other "HD" models... its not actually 1080p. Well, the image in the video file has the right dimensions, but the image being taken off the sensor is somewhere around 700p (less than 720HD technically). It is then being resized/upscaled to 1080p for storage and playback.

Bottom line- don't buy this as an HD camcorder. Its better than SD, but even a cheapo consumer 720p will render a clearer image.

...just sayin. Don't get too excited about that feature. Otherwise, a nice camera indeed!

Which Digic chip is it (Digic 2, Digic 3, etc.)?

LOL Digic 2 and 3 are LOOONG gone! They introduced Digic 4 back in 2008, and pretty much all Canons have been using them ever since. Which stinks, because a lot has changed in digital imaging since '08, yet they haven't upgraded the architecture.
Back then, I don't think they expected to be pumping 1080p through the compressor, and so they've had to cut corners to still be using it.

We're all anxiously waiting for Digic 5, which should hopefully alleviate many of the current issues.

As for pricing... I haven't been watching the consumer market, but I know that Amazon's prices on Canon and Nikon DSLR equipment has actually shot up $50-$100 since the Japan disaster. Rumor is some manufacturing plants have had to close for now, which is going to effect the supply versus demand.

Leica has one of the cleanest lenses around.

A downside with the camera is that menu isn't so user friendly, and although as a tech-guy I don't usually have issues with such thing, after sometime that I have the camera, I don't find it working smoothly to the extend that I'd expect it to go.

Is it a point-and-shoot, or a professional camera?

Well something in between, but with point n shoot functions, which is very important if you take pics of little kids, or action pics in general.
