If this guy checked bags and didn't already have his preferred seat assignments, then yes, this guy is already a jerk simply for making the threat, since he knows the plane's departure would be delayed if he follows through on the threat not to board and/or to deplane.

If the guy didn't check bags, then deplaning isn't a big deal at all.
What should he do? If the gate agent wouldnt confirm it, he'll tell them before he gets on the plane to remove his luggage. What's the difference?
And once again I think you missed the point, the guy isn't threatening anyone. He truly would get off the plane. He won't fly without those conditions

This is silly. Only a jerk would check bags, then wait until the gate agent shows up 45-60 minutes before the flight to threaten not to board unless his seats are changed. Why not inquire before checking the bags?

"Do what I want or I'll inconvenience you and 100-200 passengers" is a threat. You're getting sillier by the post.

It takes longer than 45 min to get a bag off a plane??

It might, since the people tasked with loading bags would have to stop that process while finding the bag(s) to unload.

Regardless, why would someone check bags and wait for the gate agent when the agents at baggage check can look at the seating availability? What you're describing is a jerk move, through and through.

When did anyone ever make that threat? (Aside from if promised by the gate agent)
Its not meant as a threat but rather, the gate agent misled us, now we would like to disembark. The rest of the aircraft may perceive it as a threat, and that's why they may be accommodating, but I believe I made it pretty clear that we are talking about someone who isn't threatening, but rather truly didn't have in mind to get on that plane if those conditions aren't met

It's exactly what you described in #200.

No one, other than a jerk, checks bags but then proceeds to tell the gate agent that he won't actually be flying unless his preferred seating arrangement is arranged.

What would you do if the check in desk can't help you? Let's say you had to take a flight, and you can't sit next to a specific person on that flight (be creative, you just broke up with them or something). You wouldn't check your bags if the checkin desk can't help you? But you need to take that flight...so you check your bags and speak to the gate agent...

Whatever story you come up with is a personal problem that shouldn't result in other passengers being inconvenienced in the slightest way.

And there we go again in circles. How you inconveniencing anyone? If the airline doesn't want to accommodate your request, then they'll give you your luggage back. That's as far as the inconvenience goes

45 minutes is plenty of time to get the suitcases of the plane

I have two questions.
1 - Why hasn't this been moved to JS?
2 - Do I have a nic I am not aware of?
"LESS IS MORE" It is the cumulative effect that kills deals!!! How many times do I have to say this?  >:(

Five seconds at Google:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/california-woman-united-airlines-changed-seat-because-gender/
IF (and that's a very big IF, as I will point out below) the story occurred AS ALLEGED (you only have one side, out of three parties - if you count the two Pakistanis as one, or four parties if you allow each one of them to have their own version), then I think all would agree that the gate agent was WAY out of line.

However, I tend to doubt the veracity of the story as presented.

You claim to fly a lot. Why don't you try the following experiment: every time you fly ask the gate agent if the person assigned the seat next to you is a male or female, and report back on how often you got them to give you that information. Then, if you get that information, claim some reason why you can't sit next to that person, and see what happens. Please report back with your findings.

I would venture to guess that if there is any truth to the story reported, the female passenger was probably asked if she would be willing to move, and probably agreed (though wasn't happy about it inside her). The other alternative might have been that she might have been involuntarily assigned an equivalent (as in same position, but in a better row) or even much better seat, so the gate agent felt that everyone could be made happy without any sacrifice.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!
