Sammy,
I'm planning on taking LY028 on the 22nd, and I wonder whether you have any thoughts about delays to that flight.  Did it seem to you that ElAl was getting its act togther with the wet lease so that, by the 22nd, the contingency plan would be in place?  Also, how long was your delay and what, if anything, did ElAl do for you or other passengers in terms of comps/accomodations?
Thanks in advance.
I will offer you my unsolicited advice: prepare for the worst, hope for the best!

It is obvious that ELAL as a company has a flawed DNA when it comes to realizing what the customers mean to them. The senior pilots (and to an extent management) is stuck in the old arrogant Israeli mentality. They don't realize that their customers are their number 1 asset, rather than someone who should thank them for their kindness in providing service. Even Israelis realize this now: http://www.globes.co.il/news/article.aspx?did=1001161638
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Everyone likes to bash El Al, but they really have gotten better on price.  I've seen plenty of fares that are equal to or less than other competing non-stop flights.  Business to Europe isn't the cheapest, but the product is vastly superior (King David lounge at TLV and a truly different cabin with upgraded hardware vs. Dan Lounge and economy-style seats with an empty middle seat on most European airlines).

On NYC-TLV route they are often cheaper than UA or DL, but $100 or $200 saving doesn't warrant subjecting myself to the ELAL experience (and very limited use loyalty program).
Without Elal UA/DL business class would have been $6k+ and economy would have had advance purchase like crazy. Check it out, the difference between a NY-TLV fare vs NY-BRU
Let's do this a mite more scientifically, and actually check.
Screenshots attached are Google flights results for NYC-TLV RT nonstop on December 2016, with a one week stay.

ITA/GF shows lots of phantom space on Elal

+1
ELAL obviously has the largest inventory availability on TLV-NYC-TLV route.

I am not hoping for ELAL to die (though that might be a form of creative destruction), but rather for a major shakeup and attitude change.

If they continue on the current trajectory, within a few weeks they will be cancelling all their flights due to abandonment by customers.

From Globes today :

http://www.globes.co.il/en/article-el-al-dispute-with-pilots-escalates-1001161464

What about compensation?

The frustrated passengers can take comfort in the Aviation Services Law (Compensation and Assistance for Flight Cancellations and Changes in Conditions) - 2012, which sets compensation for cancellation of a flight under certain conditions (for example, in case of an organized strike, the airline is not legally obligated to compensate passengers).

Advocates Vered Cohen and Raanan Bar-On explain that unavailability of pilots is not classed as a reason exempting the airline from providing monetary compensation. The law stipulates compensation in the NIS 1,290-3,080 range, in addition to giving back the money the passengers paid for their tickets. Compensation is determined by the flight distance.

At the same time, Cohen and Bar-On made it clear that the airline is exempt from providing this compensation in cases in which the passengers reach compensation agreements with the airline, for example, if a passenger agrees to accept a free ticket (in addition to reimbursement for the original ticket). The same is true in a case in which the passenger was notified of the expected cancellation, and was offered an alternative flight close to the original flight (from one hour in advance of the takeoff time to two hours after the original landing time).
So are people actually being compensated?
What are elal doing? Sitting on getting new pilots? Working on coming to agreement?

Tonight's flight from JFK cancelled. Anyone know if there's a chance they'll rebook me on another airline or offer anything else?
