AA Gold Status for $749

Is it worth it to buy Gold status for $749?
I use avios to book often but never get upgrades... is this a smart way to do so?

Rip off.
AA doesn't upgrade award tickets. And you need to pay to upgrade paid tickets except short-hauls that usually don't have first class.

AA Gold is really silver status. Not worth much.

They announced they'll upgrade EXP award tickets "sometime in 2017"
