It only works for the future. It doesn't help with Google Drive and Google photos.

Not the official Forward way, but through a Filter in Gmail it is possible:

Gmvault is only backing up 1000 emails and 1000 chats

I use the commands

Quote

gmvault sync xxx@gmail.com

and it will only back up 1000 emails and chats

how do I get it to back up my whole gmail account ?

It might be just a setting in gmail settings. Go in the gmail settings to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" section, and look at the "Folder Size Limits" if it is set to a thousand.

If I use google takeout then do I have to download the zip files every time I do a backup? If I forward the email to Yahoo then the zip file should be there to download at any time, right?

They expire after a week.

I would assume that the links would die if you account was shut down

Its not only about pissing off google. Your account could be hacked or google could have a critical failure.

Bottom line is you would have to store the emails your self

You can have it upload directly to your Dropbox or OneDrive

in the last few minutes my gmail accounts are suddenly signing out on me, any idea whats going on or if that's a sign that they are closing me down!?

Try logging out of all accounts and logging back in one at a time. Sometimes browsers get confused when you use multiple accounts.
