United award booking never ticketed

I booked an air Canada flight lax-yyz for this Sunday back in September. Apparently, the flight never ticketed and I didn't realize until tonight. No one was willing to confirm me now on that flight, instead insisting I book a united flight (through ORD)
Is there anything I can do to get on the air Canada flight?

maybe ask if you can get on standby list?

Would it be incredibly stupid to book the flight revenue via united and dispute the charge?

Took stopover in ORD. They wouldn't open up lax-ewr. HUCA like 3 times and gave up.
Gave me 5K for my troubles
