I second that. I was using Symantec Corporate for years until I decided it was slowing down my system like crazy. I now use AVG 8.0 (recently upgraded from 7.5. Choose 7.5 if you want the free version), and I'm very happy with it.
No offense, but AVG sucks too. I do a lot of downloading "hint hint". And AVG is notorious for coming up with false positives.

If you research it, you will find that Avira happens to be one of the best antivirus programs out there. And it's completely free. It has yet to give a false positive.

While I agree with you that AVG does give false positives, in fact it just did to me with the Office 2007 keygen, I still believe it is the fastest antivirus out there, meaning that it slows down your computer the least. That's very important to me and I'll take the false pos's every now and then.

All in all, Ubnutu rules. You have complete control of your system and that's the main thing. Plus I love the open source stuff. I am currently learning c# and I respect the people that put hard work into a program and don't charge for it.

Linux is a very powerful OS, you just have to learn how to utilize it.

Funny... as I'm reading this I'm installing Ubuntu on an old toshiba laptop here for my daughter.
P3 700Mhz flies with ubuntu whereas XP was barely useable on it.
Only problem- I want to use this as an a2dp receiver for my home stereo and replace the bluetooth adaptor on my home speaker system. ubuntu has questionable bluetooth support, and wireless audio profiles leave much to be desired. XP can do this well with the right stack (broadcomm, bluesoliel), but the irony is that Vista has a2dp and other advanced BT profiles built in with plug-and-play ease of use.
But vista on a p3 700mhz is out of the question, so back to XP...

I was actually going to put ubuntu on my sis's comp thats like 5 years old. lol.

P3 850mhz and 128MB ram. That thing is slow as hell.

Btw, mordy, I am using no2's 5069, latest release and I really like it. I pretty much have a constant 20mb free of ram. and it's blazing fast. I think he did a great job on this one.

I am officially leaving dcd and going no2. You were right about it.

For some reason it wouldn't work with Radio 3.39 so I rolled back to the 3.35 Radio. Hope that helps.

Did you ever try Avira. Seriously, try it and tell me what uses more resources. I can guarantee you that avira uses less.

It has about a 7MB footprint. Does AVG beat it?

29MB! That is a lot. Imagine the CPU usage on that thing. I am disappointed in you.

5 exe's running in the background, 0 CPU usage, and 23MB of RAM being used.. Ok, maybe yours is better. I don't have time to research it. I'm happy with AVG. The only thing that bothers me which is kinda major is when I tell it to ignore the threat, it doesn't really ignore the actual file. It just removes the screen showing me the virus and then brings it back up about 30 seconds later.

I just now got a virus with AVG. It got by McAffee as well. It didn't get by Kaspersky. I will try what you mentioned. You should realise that what is free to you is free to the hackers as well and is probably the first thing they test their virus against. I suggest that you occasionally do the free online test from Kaspersky.

Umm, about that free thing for hackers. Dude, they crack that stuff anyway. I'd like to think that I know the scene a bit. And trust me, they don't pay for anything. If anything, they spend their time trying to hack programs that charge.

When programs charge, it shows one thing. That the program is basically s*** and you have to pay full price to try it out and then you find out it's crap but by then they already have your money.

All the best programs out there are freeware and a lot of them open source. Firefox ring a bell, it's the most secure and best broweser out there, oh and did I mention it's free.

Do you know anything about firewalls? Comodo which is free, is currently one of the most powerful and effective firewalls out now. And with a tiny memory footprint.

Norton, which happens to be extremely expensive, is the biggest joke of an antivirus program. Besides the fact that it takes up about half your cpu and ram, the thing can't stop crap! And the people that have it, think "I paid x amount of money for it so it's gotta be the best". That's @%# @%@!@

I can go on and on about how many awesome free programs are out there. But I am not going to waste my time telling you.

Glad you took my advice. Its like a whole new device- the way it *SHOULD* have been from the factory, right? Did you notice Direct Draw works now?
Every now and then I actually do know what I'm talking about... ;)

And that's just a beta. Some things may/will still be a little off, that's what he's already released 5069b last night... !!!
Yeah, a new release 2 days later. This is the way its going to be until he's happy enough with it to call it 6070 and make it an official "stable" release. Meanwhile, I'm on 5060 still waiting for the next one he deams stable enough.

5069b Already came out. Jeez that man is good. The truth is, I was into this whole thing about 5 months ago, and haven't really been checking up on it since, so I didn't really know what was going on. No2 is a great chef, I think he did an awesome job on the one I am using now. I already got a lot of things hooked up so it's going to be a pain to flash again. oh well.

Thank you for letting me know about this. DCD's gotta come back into the loop, it's night and day between him and no2.

It's spelled "Deems" not "deams". I just had to do that, because of your comment about bochurim not knowing English! lol

All the best man. I'll let you know how 5069b goes.

We could be so busy correcting people all our lives. Someone I know (hint hint Mordy) - or actually don't know at all besides for a few back and forth e-mails, sent me the following funny stick-art clip from xkcd:

Thats actually a pretty funny picture. Very real. By the way, I am not the one who made a section for people to learn how to spell. And nor am I the one who said that the secular education for bochurim is sad. I am just trying to make a point that everyone makes mistakes.

Thanks for the correction.
Yes, I make PLENTY of typos on the internet, as I said once before, this isn't my job. I'm much more careful about my use of the language when I'm doing technical writing or writing a column to be published- or, at least I try. Thank goodness for editors.

Anyway, Eli, you missed the best part of that comic... if you mouse over the original comic on xkcd, you get to see the author's comments, which are often funnier then the whole thing.

In this case, the author says "But if I leave, they'll still be wrong!!"

I fixed it this way, which should still work even if the kernel gets updated (I think). Add the following lines to your /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file:

# these aes modules break the airo driver
blacklist padlock_aes
blacklist geode_aes

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modprobe#Blacklist:
"modprobe is a Linux program written by Rusty Russell used to add/remove a module to/from the Linux kernel"
"There are cases where two or more modules both support the same devices, or a module invalidly claims to support a device: the blacklist keyword indicates that all of a particular module's internal aliases are to be ignored."
