AA Routing Rules

Booked a ticket with AA miles, JFK-LAX-AKL-MEL on AA/QF.
Got an email shortly after to call regarding the res.

When I called they said they can't ticket it because LAX-AKL-MEL is an invalid routing.

From what I can find about their routing rules, only via a third region is not allowed.
Anyone heard/know of/had experience with this?

Sounds pretty straightforward, I wouldn't see a problem with it, however, I must note that whenever I received an email from AA about a booking, they had some se'if koton, which excluded this particular route I had chosen.
