CC Insurance Using Turo Car Rentals (Basically Airbnb for Cars)
« on: November 28, 2016, 11:51:51 AM »
It's a website (turo.com) that Seems like an airbnb for cars, and I'm considering using it for an upcoming trip, as it's more affordable than any car rental company for an SUV or minivan.

They offer optional insurance coverage, but I'm wondering whether or not regular CC protection would qualify here (I have Amex Platinum and Citi Prestige). Does anyone have any information?

BTW, if anyone is interested in signing up, please feel free to use my referral code, and we both make $25: https://turo.com/referral?code=2144569r0HmB0.

Thanks!

Did you end up using Turo.com? If yes, how was your experience?

I did, and I had mainly possitive experience. My experience with the owner was fantastic-- I got a great price, the car was great and he was very professional--but that is the luck of the draw. However, whenever I needed to contact the company with questions or issues, they took weeks to respond. Overall though, if you are comfortable with peer to peer transactions, I would recommend the company.

That's actually a bad sign. If you can't contact them, what do you do in the event the person lending the car is a scammer?

They did always reply to my e-mails eventually, so it's not as if I can't contact them. If the car-owner ends up being a scammer and I do not hear back from the company, I would deal directly with my credit card. In any case, it's not as if the company can send me a replacement car right away, since they do not have a fleet of their own.

My bigger concern would be if I had an accident using a rented vehicle, but even then, I would be much more concerned as an owner than renter.

And like with any peer to peer service, I would recommend only renting from owners with significant positive feedback.

From Amex (BGR)

Coverage applies for the first 30 days of a vehicle rental and when rented from a Car Rental Company. Coverage is not available for ride-sharing companies that allow individuals to rent out their personal vehicle.

Yea, in the end I just paid for insurance through the company. For $1M coverage with a $500 deductable, I think I paid around $120 for the week. The car worth around $80k, so I thought it was worth it. Even with the insurance, I saved around 60% vs. renting from an established rental company. BH I didn't need to use it so I don't know how easy it would be to make a claim though.

which leads us to this from AMEX:
This policy does not cover some vehicles, e.g. full-sized sport utility vehicles, off-road vehicles, cars with an original manufacturer's suggested new retail price of USD $50,000 or more, and exotic cars, as described in the Terms and Conditions.

Interesting. Sounds kind of sketchy.

I would say more mismanaged than sketchy.

The question is, as far as the car owners insurance goes , is he covered in the event of an accident?

Wanted to use them recently, not a single car available in NYC. Any reason why?

If you don't need a car directly from the airport, then NJ is pretty close to NYC. It's just a bridge or a tunnel away.

Just checked rates in BOS. Unless your looking for a high end car, the prices are ridiculous. $50 for a Hyundai sonata :o Enterprise is cheaper....

Yup, I've found the same. For large or expensive vehicles (i.e. 7-seat SUVS, Suburbans, Escalades, Teslas, etc..), Turo is the way to go. I rented an Escalade for $60/day whee a rental company wanted almost $500/day. For a regular car, you are better off going through a rental company (and for anyone who is doing that, make sure to search this site for discount codes).
