Any advice on a Brokerage account hack
« on: December 07, 2016, 06:21:42 PM »
Any advice on a Brokerage account which was hacked. specifically a  hacker logged in to my email account and forged a letter to a frum broker authorizing a third party disbursement. This was caught on the third attempt after the first two was successful.

The broker should probably have insurance to cover for things like this.

Also, your homeowners insurance might have coverage for identity theft.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Would this all be covered if the first transaction was the beginning of November? Also, is there anything to gain by going down to where the culprit is expecting the $ tomorrow or have the local law enforcement ? i woudl assume a police report would have to be files first.

I would call the police now and see what you can do by tomorrow.

Did you discuss with the broker? This is a serious crime. The broker might have procedures for reporting. In any event, reporting to local police might be a step to take (though it might be a waste of time).

The broker is the one who called us to confirm that we are the one whom are requesting this transaction which was sent from our email. (which was hacked) nothing unusual. BH they were able to stop today's transaction after it was already picked up by fedex for overnight delivery down to Florida

Unfortunately even if the police is sent to where the culprit is expecting the money, they'll only find a third party who is not in the know of anything or the such. He'll be booked and released after getting no info from the third party (because they are probably uninformed about what exactly is happening).
I'm not who you think I am.

Curious. How much money  are we talking here? Are transfers done by simply emailing the broker? What made the broker suspect it this time?

The broker should have notified the FBI right then and there.

I think the broker has full liability here. If given email instructions to send funds to a third party where no standing authority for such transactions is given, the broker should have at least done a verification using a different, secure, mode.

This was for 78k over two transactions. today was the third attempt which finally raised a red flag by the broker. The broker contacted us and was just confirming that we were indeed asking for this disbursement.  The broker said that today's address and name was different from the last one and that is y they also called. We went to file a police report. we were told this needs to be filed with the FBI as this is a federal crime. I am being told by a employer that it is mandatory to have negligence/error insurance which he personally has and it covers a million per transaction.  He said noone going to just write you a check. You will have to go after it.  The broker just required a account number and signature on their release form. To me this sounds like very loose security. I have my suspicion that the Secretary or whom ever authorized did not follow protocol all thought i am just assuming.   we are by this place for ver 20 years as they know our transactions and neither of these come even close to anything we would do.

That.

Which is why I said the broker has full liability. You should call the principal of the office to complain (though if the broker is a Yid, you should probably advise him of your plans). There is no way in the world that you should accept anything less than being made 100% whole.

I would say that if the broker didn't report this yet to his superiors he could be in trouble, as these things need to be reported promptly.
